TMEP as a Resource for Trademark Applications

Overview

The USPTO’s Trademark Manual of Examining Procedure (TMEP) is a publication and reference for the practices and procedures for the process of registering marks at the USPTO, with guidelines for examining attorneys to follow in the examination of trademark applications. TMEP is also a resource to use for detailed answers to questions regarding a federal trademark application or the maintenance of a registration – for attorneys or other applicants.

Ways to find information in the TMEP

The two main ways to find information in the TMEP is with the search bar or navigating the Table of Contents.

Search Bar:

The TMEP allows the user to search the TMEP using search terms similar to that used in Google. The search bar is located at the top of the TMEP homepage. Shorter search queries generally work better than longer search queries.

Table of Contents:

Different topics can be viewed by browsing the Table of Contents that appears on the left side of the screen. The are nineteen chapters of the TMEP, with each chapter addressing trademark practices, policies, and procedures for the given topic.
