Escapenet.com (Escapenet) is a patent search platform, and is especially helpful at finding international patent documents. US and Foreign patents and patent applications can be found with Escapenet.
Similar to the Patent Public Search (the patent search platform provided by the USPTO), Escapenet provides plenty of options for conducting advanced searches.
One of the best tools Escapenet has for advanced searching is the proximity operator “prox/distance<nr.” This tool is a proximity operator which can be placed between search terms to find documents that contain the search terms less than “nr” words apart, independent of order.
Search results are displayed on the left pane of the website, while documents from the search results are displayed on the right pane of the website.
You can navigate through the sections of a document by using the drop down menu located on the left of the document viewer. This drop down menu can be used to view the document’s drawings, descriptions, and original pdf.
As an example of a patent search within Escapenet, you are looking for a mouse trap which has a rolling element over a bucket filled with liquid.
Example search queries:
“mouse prox/distance<10 (trap OR bucket)” searches for documents that contain the term “mouse” within 9 words of the terms “trap” or “bucket.” This search finds 62 results.
“(mouse prox/distance<10 trap*) AND (roll* OR bucket)” searches for documents that contains the term “mouse” and any ending variation of the term “trap” within 9 words of each other, and contain the term “bucket” or any ending variation of the term “roll” in the document. This search finds 1,265 results.
“(mouse prox/distance<10 trap*) AND ((bucket prox/distance<10 open*) OR (roll* prox/distance<10 cross*))” searches for documents that have the term “mouse” and any ending variation of the term “trap” within 9 words of each other. The document must also contain the terms “bucket” and any ending variation of “open” within 9 words of each other, or any ending variation of the terms “roll” and “cross” within 9 words of each other. This search finds 100 results.
Three search results and their patent numbers, which come from this search are:
CN203814446 (Chinese Patent),
US11116201B1 (US Patent), and
US20220061305A1 (US Patent Application).
Escapenet has a concise help guide called a Pocket guide on search operators and how to use them effectively.
