Including beginning and ending variations of a word mark is one of many different search techniques that can be utilized in TESS. The Basic Index search field in the Free Form Search function of TESS will search for a word mark indexed, providing the most efficient search when searching for word marks.
By adding the truncation operator * to the right or left or both sides of the word being searched, the search will retrieve marks that have the word segment in the word mark as designated by the placement of the * -- with beginning and/or ending variations.
By using the truncation operator * on either side of the search term (ie. *TURN*) and the Basic Index [BI] (ie. *TURN*[BI]), the search will retrieve marks that have the word segment TURN anywhere in the word mark.
For another example, you have a trademark name of “whirly.”
The main element might be considered “whirl.”
When conducting a basic word search using the truncation operator of the * in the Basic Index in the Free Form Search Function of TESS a possible search query could be:
*whirl*[BI]
The following are a few examples of what this search yielded:
As seen from the examples, the element of “whirl” can be:
The truncation operator * may also be used in the Basic Index when searching multiple terms within the same search statement and when the desired search result does not require the terms to be adjacent to each other in the mark.
By using the truncation operator * before and at the end of the key word element in a Basic Index [BI] search, the results identify the key word element as any part of a mark – at the beginning, within the mark, or at the end.
When using the truncation operator *, the TESS search system responds more quickly and more efficiently than the truncation mark $, which is the standard substitution character. Using the truncation operator $ is problematic – it is burdensome for the TESS systems as the number of records to review is extensive, resulting in a time-consuming process. When doing a search in the Basic Index [BI], using the truncation operator * as the left and right character substitution operator is more efficient and preferred over the use of the $ truncation operator.
The Basic Index also contains pseudo marks. A pseudo mark is an inserted element into the record file within TESS but it is not displayed in the record. A pseudo mark is an intentional misspelling of a normal English word such as gr8 for great. Therefore if great is searched in the Basic Index the term gr8 will also show up in search results.
