The main USPTO, and specifically the "trademark" tab is a good source to gain information about trademarks.
When looking to obtain information about a trademark application, registration, or maintenance of a registration, the “trademark” tab contains a variety of informational resources and guidance.
In the trademarks tab, there are six main sections of information:
1) Trademark Basics
This section includes basic trademark information including a process overview, trademark fee information, guidance for hiring a U.S. licensed attorney, and state resource availability information. This section also includes the IP Identifier providing guidance on how to identify creative ideas that may be intellectual property (IP) and how to protect them.
2) Search Trademarks
This section provides information for doing a clearance search, with guidance for developing a strategy for an effective search and to assist in identifying classes and design codes to use when searching the Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS), the USPTO’s database of trademarks that has been registered or applied for.
3) Apply to register your trademark
Information about the Trademark Electronic Application System (TEAS) for new applications and filing options is provided under this section. Additionally, the “Guides, Manuals, and Resources” subsection provides access to various guidelines and manuals that assist in the application process and how to verify one’s identity for filing.
4) Protect against scams
This section provides scam alerts and means of protecting oneself from phony and false claims of trademark assistance.
5) Maintain your registration
This section provides information on how to maintain a trademark registration, how to check on the registration status and viewing of documents, how to enforce your trademark rights, and information on transferring ownership of a trademark.
6) Law and rules
This section contains information about the Trademark Modernization Act (TMA), procedures regarding trademark proceedings, Trademark Federal Register Notices and Comments, and any examination guides issued after the July 2022 publication of the Trademark Manual of Examining Procedure (TMEP). The TMEP is the reference for the practices and procedures relative to the process of registering marks at the USPTO, with required guidelines for examining attorneys to follow in the examination of trademark applications.
