Trademarks are registered under a certain good or service (or more than one good or service).
Goods and services are defined under International Classes (IC's) - also called classes. In addition to an International Class, the good or service will be defined by a written description. The Trademark Office allows any written description which accurately describes the good or service – although the Trademark Office does give suggested descriptions.
The appropriate class for a good or service can be found in the Trademark ID Manual.
To use the Trademark ID Manual, you should type in a word or two which describes the good/service. Then you'll get a list of results. Then look through the description column to find the best description, which will have in the same row, the class number identifying that description.
Also, be aware that the Notes column will guide you to what is the best description, where the Notes will have guidance about frequent points of confusion about the description or class for that particular good/service.
Also, be aware that when looking at the list there will be results which are not the proper description for that good/service but an old description or put in a new class due to re-classification. So look at the symbols in the column of Status. A description with a status of D should not be used because D is for “deleted," meaning no longer used. The status of A is for “added” and is acceptable. The status of M is for “modified” and is acceptable but modified over time. The status of X is for “example” and is acceptable but generally there is a better description available.
